As freshmen at the Northeastern University DAmore-McKim School of Business, making it to their 8 a.m. Financial Accounting class meant sacrificing breakfast — including coffee.It might not have been very fun at the time,  but it was the beginning of something that would consume the rest of their college years. Fayad and Kothari would go on to launch Eat Your Coffee — formerly New Grounds Food — a startup producing caffeine-focused natural foods. Their first product, the Eat Your Coffee Bar, is now available in three flavors and is sold online and by retailers around the United States. The two co-founders? Theyre still finishing their last year of school.â€Å"It started with a bit of a joke — why can’t we just eat our coffee?† Kothari says. â€Å"But we ended up going to the grocery store, and then back to our dorm kitchen, and started trying to make a batch of edible coffee. Then we started giving it to our friends. They definitely tasted interesting, in the beginning.† TRIAL AND ERROR AND COLLEGE DORM COOKING Trial and error was essential. Neither Fayad nor Kothari had any experience with cooking, other than helping their parents around the kitchen back home. â€Å"There was a dingy kitchen downstairs (in the dorms), and we’d go there late at night, maybe around 10:30 or 11, after everyone else had used it. We’d clean it up, and then make a batch,† Fayad says. â€Å"Then we’d give it to our friends, and maybe give them a caffeine boost to keep them working through 2 a.m.† In the beginning, the cooking was more of a math equation, Kothari says. They had a sp readsheet where they kept track of the ingredients that went into each batch. They wanted the product to be healthy, but also taste good. Ultimately they decided on an energy bar with wholesome ingredients, like dates, oats, cashews — and of course caffeine from real coffee.The Coffee Bar. We had to learn not to put water in the bars, because it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria,† Fayad says. â€Å"And there were a lot of things that seem like second nature now. Once they were satisfied with the product, they started selling the bars  around campus. â€Å"It was a way to make a small profit, to pay for all those trips to the grocery store,† Kothari says. â€Å"And it was really cool, too. Our friends liked them, but when we st arted giving them to strangers, and they liked them too, it was a big validation step for us.† USING NORTHEASTERN’S RESOURCES While they were experimenting with recipes, Fayad and Kothari joined the Husky Startup Challenge, a four- to five-week business development competition run by the Northeastern Entrepreneurs Club.   Ã¢â‚¬Å"It’s about taking your business concept and bringing it to life, and we ended up winning Audience Favorite, probably because we handed out samples,† Fayad says.From there, they got into IDEA, the university’s student-run venture accelerator, and were awarded $10,000 in gap funding.â€Å"Finding a manufacturer was the next hurdle,† Fayad says. â€Å"It took us eight months to find one who would work with us. We were 18 and 19 years old then, so we had to talk to 100 manufacturers just to get one to do a test run with us.† Fayad and Kothari officially founded the company at the beginning of their sophomore  ye ar. Right now, Fayad, the CEO, handles sales and fundraising; Kothari, the CFO, is in charge of operations and finance.GETTING THE WORD OUTThe immediate challenge was how to get the word out. For a while, they had marketed the Eat Your Coffee Bar just by walking around campus and talking to people. By the end of the war, Mexico would lose almost half its territory to the US, including lands from Texas to California. The war was a key event in American History as it fulfilled its manifest destiny, encompassing land from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific.   The Idea of Manifest Destiny In the 1840s, America was struck with the idea of manifest destiny: the belief that the country should span from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. Two areas stood in Americas way of achieving this: the Oregon Territory which was occupied by both Great Britain and the US and western and southwestern lands which were owned by Mexico. Presidential candidate James K. Polk fully embraced manifest destiny, even running on the campaign slogan 5440 or Fight, referring to the northern latitude line to which he believed the American portion of the Oregon Territory should span. By 1846, the Oregon issue was settled with America. Great Britain agreed to set the border at the 49th parallel, a line that still stands today as the border between the US and Canada. However, the Mexican lands were considerably harder to attain. In 1845, the US had admitted Texas as a slave state after it had achieved independence from Mexico in 1836. While the Texans believed that their southern border should be at the Rio Grande River, Mexico claimed it should be at the Nueces River, further north. Texas Border Dispute Turns Violent Early in 1846, President Polk sent General Zachary Taylor and American troops to protect the disputed area between the two rivers. On April 25, 1846, a Mexican cavalry unit of 2000 men crossed the Rio Grande and ambushed an American unit of 70 men led by Captain Seth Thornton. Sixteen men were killed, and five were injured. Fifty men were taken prisoner. Polk took this as an opportunity to ask Congress to declare war against Mexico. As he stated, But now, after reiterated menaces, Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon the American soil. She has proclaimed that hostilities have commenced and that the two nations are now at war. Two days later, on May 13, 1846, Congress declared war. However, many questioned the necessity of the war, especially northerners who feared an increase in the power of slave states. Abraham Lincoln, then the representative from Illinois, became a vocal critic of the war and argued that it was unnecessary and unwarranted. War With Mexico In May 1846, General Taylor defended the Rio Grande and then led his troops from there to Monterrey, Mexico. He was able to capture this key city in September 1846. He was then told to hold his position with only 5,000 men while General Winfield Scott would lead an attack on Mexico City. Mexican General Santa Anna took advantage of this, and on February 23, 1847, near the Buena Vista Ranch met Taylor in battle with approximately 20,000 troops. After two fierce days of fighting, Santa Annas troops retreated. On March 9, 1847, General Winfield Scott landed at Veracruz, Mexico leading troops to invade southern Mexico. By September 1847, Mexico City fell to Scott and his troops. Meanwhile, starting in August 1846, General Stephen Kearnys troops were ordered to occupy New Mexico. He was able to take the territory without a fight. Upon his victory, his troops were divided in two so that some went to occupy California while others went to Mexico. In the meantime, Americans living in California revolted in what was called the Bear Flag Revolt. They claimed independence from Mexico and called themselves the California Republic. Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo The Mexican War officially ended on February 2, 1848, when America and Mexico agreed to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. With this treaty, Mexico recognized Texas as independent and the Rio Grande as its southern border. In addition, through the Mexican Cession, America required land that included parts of present-day Arizona, California, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah. In that moment, I felt the change with every gust of wind. There were 20 girls with a common goal and a love for the game, all from a diverse background brought together. But at this moment of frustration they all came together to enjoy life. At the age of 17, I had started a movement of change. Perhaps at that time I did not realize the magnitude of what I had started. I was able to put in place a girls’ soccer team, with no funding from the school and completely on my own. Early Life Its believed de Maupassant was born at the Chà ¢teau de Miromesniel, Dieppe on Aug. 5, 1850. His paternal ancestors were noble, and his maternal grandfather Paul Le Poittevin was the artist Gustave Flauberts godfather. His parents separated when he was 11 years old after his mother, Laure Le Poittevin, left his father Gustave de Maupassant. She took custody of Guy and his younger brother, and it was her influence that led her sons to develop an appreciation for literature. But it was her friend Flaubert who opened doors for the budding young writer. Flaubert and de Maupassant Flaubert would prove to be a major influence on de Maupassants life and career.  Much like Flauberts paintings, de Maupassants stories told the plight of the lower classes. Flaubert took young Guy as a kind of protege, introducing him to significant writers of the day such as Emile Zola and Ivan Turgenev. It was through Flaubert that de Maupassant became familiar with (and part of) the naturalist school of writers, a style that would permeate nearly all of his stories. De Maupassant Writing Career From 1870-71, Guy de Maupassant served in the French Army. He then became a government clerk. He moved from Normandy to Paris after the war, and after leaving his clerkship in the French Navy he worked for several prominent French newspapers. In 1880, Flaubert published one of his most famous short stories Boule du Suif, about a prostitute pressured to provide her services to a Prussian officer. Perhaps his best-known work, The Necklace, tells the story of Mathilde, a working-class girl who borrows a necklace from a wealthy friend when she attends a high society party. Mathilde loses the necklace and works the rest of her life to pay for it, only discovering years later that it was a worthless piece of costume jewelry. Her sacrifices had been for nothing. This theme of a working-class person unsuccessfully trying to rise above their station was common in de Maupassants stories. Even though his writing career spanned barely a decade, Flaubert was prolific, writing some 300 short stories, three plays, six novels, and hundreds of newspaper articles. The commercial success of his writing made Flaubert famous and independently wealthy. De Maupassant Mental Illness At some point in his 20s, de Maupassant contracted syphilis, a sexually transmitted disease that, if left untreated, leads to mental impairment. This is unfortunately what happened to de Maupassant. By 1890, the disease had started to cause increasingly strange behavior. Some critics have charted his developing mental illness through the subject matter of his stories. But de Maupassants horror fiction is only a small portion of his work, some 39 stories or so. But even these works had significance; Stephen Kings famous novel The Shining has been compared to Maupassants The Inn. Death After a gruesome suicide attempt in 1891 (he tried to cut his throat),  de Maupassant spent the last 18 months of his life in a Paris mental home, the celebrated private asylum of Dr. Espirit Blanche. Emmanuel Torres is a poet, art critic, professor of English and Comparative Literature at the Ateneo de Manila and curator of its art museum who was born on April 29, 1932 in Manila.
